Jax Mercantile Co. 2010 Expansion—Fort Collins, Colorado
Shear Engineering Corporation provided the civil sitework design and building foundation as well as structural designs for an expansion of the Jax Mercantile Co. store located at 1200 North College Avenue. This project site consisted of an existing 6.03 acre commercial property with a 3,000 SF retail addition. Civil site work design included the design for the utility (water and sanitary sewer) service, drainage system, water quality devices, parking lot design, and grading design. This project site is located in the Lower Dry Creek Drainage Basin and has a stormwater storage requirement for development. Supplemental items associated with the project include street over-sizing, cost estimates, easement dedications, and site certifications. The Shear civil team worked with the City on designing North College Avenue west of Jax and Jerome Street on the east side of the project to meet the design requirements of the City’s North College Access Plan, the City’s Transportation Master Plan, and adjacent properties. We coordinated with the City of Fort Collins staff on the City’s North College Improvements project which is scheduled to start in late 2011. The structural portion of the Jax Mercantile Co. expansion included a 3,000 square foot addition to an existing metal building and a 2,400 square foot log canopy structure along the east side of the expanded building. Foundation design included foundations for the log canopy and for the new building. Structural design included an analysis of existing roof components for increased loading from roof top mechanical units and a complete design of the log canopy structure. Other components involved are as follows: · Temporary pump alternative · Right of Way and easement dedications · Sitework Construction · Building Construction · State of Colorado Stormwater Discharge Permit application · Existing steel building documentation roof framing modifications · Coordination with City Departments / Surveyor, Geotechnical Engineer / traffic engineer / ELCO Water District / neighboring commercial sites / Landscape architect / Electrical engineer / Fire Suppression / steel building erector / log installer Shear Engineering Corporation was also involved in all construction aspects including sitework revisions, coordination, foundation and structural inspections, and documentation. Della Terra Mountain Chateau—Estes Park, Colorado
The Della Terra Mountain Chateau is nestled in the majestic grandeur of the Rocky Mountains in Estes Park, Colorado at the Fall River entrance to the Rocky Mountain National Park (3501 Fall River Road). It is a destination site for weddings and a variety of other special events. Shear Engineering Corporation provided the civil engineering services for Della Terra Mountain Chateau. The project consisted of a 24,000 square foot two-story, 14 room bed and breakfast facility with lower level staff quarters on approximately 13 acres. Civil engineering services included:
A retaining wall was required with the project to accommodate a final grade difference on the north side of the chateau from the excavation of the mountainside. Rosetta Stone was selected as the retaining wall product to best blend with the Rocky Mountain terrain and the architectural features of the facility while meeting site and structural requirements. Temporary fire protection was also required since public water service was not economically available at the time of construction. Massive high capacity concrete tanks were provided for fire protection water storage. Tank placement did not allow the installation of the required design lengths for the retaining wall geogrid. The tanks became the primary retaining structure and the Rosetta Stone was placed as designed in front of the tanks as the secondary retaining structure. With the final drainage design, a water quality outlet structure was installed on the east side of the property. Della Terra Mountain Chateau was completed and opened for business in 2009. The existing regional detention pond located on the south side of the site will be reconfigured and utilized for additional site detention purposes. Design also required improvements to West 43rd Avenue (an existing city collector street) and North Wilson Avenue (an existing city arterial street). A preliminary design for a North Wilson Avenue pedestrian underpass was also required. |
